JUDY GARLAND-Get happy

JUDY GARLAND DOCUMENTARY

Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers have all seen their tours get transferred to the big screen, and now an unlikely star is getting the concert-film treatment: late Hollywood legend Judy Garland.

According to the L.A. Times, Garland's historic 1961 Carnegie Hall concert will be turned into a documentary courtesy of filmmakers Steven Lippman, Jeffrey Friedman and Rob Epstein. Though Garland's comeback performance earned critical raves, countless standing ovations, and spawned a chart-topping double album, no footage exists of the actual event.

"The concert is a cultural touchstone, something I remember vividly as a kid," Friedman tells the L.A. Times. "It's a magical moment in theatrical history. And yet there's almost no record of it."

Until now.

The filmmakers hope to re-create the Carnegie Hall experience with "Stay All Night," a documentary that will combine music snippets and recently uncovered backstage footage of Garland with new interviews of people who witnessed the show. The movie will focus on the connection between Garland and her audience that evening, and the team hopes to evoke that same feeling for those seated in theaters.

"There's an opportunity to create what it's like to be in the presence of transcendent artistry," Friedman says. "The trick is to capture these unguarded moments and make the audience feel like they were there."

THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT trailer

THE GLASS BOTTOM BOAT

The Glass Bottom Boat
Euterpe / MGM, 1966, Color, 110 minutes, ***½
Released June, 1966

Doris Day entered her eighth consecutive year as a Top-10 Box-Office Star when she boarded The Glass Bottom Boat, a hilarious blending of romantic comedy and the era's burgeoning spy-movie genre.

Day plays a Girl Friday at a hush-hush aeronautics think tank. When colleagues suspect she's an espionage agent, Jennifer chaotically sets out to clear her name. Looney Tunes alumnus Frank Tashlin directs with a cartoonist's sensibility - or zany insensibility - embracing everything from spy guises to push-button chaos in a futuristic kitchen. With top comedians Arthur Godfrey, Paul Lynde, Edward Andrews, John McGiver, Dom DeLuise and Dick Martin in tow, The Glass Bottom Boat is loaded top to bottom with seethrough fun.

The support cast includes Paul Lynde as a security agent and Dom DeLuise as a bumbling spy. Even Robert Vaughn gets into the act with a cameo as Napoleon Solo from TV's "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." Lots of laughs!

BARBARA AND FRANK SINATRA

BARBARA SINATRA-LIFE WITH FRANK

Barbara Sinatra was her famous husband's fourth wife. Also his last. He died in her arms in 1998. They had been married 22 years.

Frank Sinatra's widow Barbara, 84, dishes on what it was like living with Ol' Blue Eyes in her new memoir.

It wasn't always pretty, although she says she was the "luckiest woman in the world" to be his wife.

Sinatra's widow, 84, is now telling what it was like living with Ol' Blue Eyes in her aptly titled memoir Lady Blue Eyes: My Life With Frank.

If you're interested in celebrity marriages, this memoir is the predictable dip into such shallow waters. If you're not, you can at least pass the time counting the names dropped. There are thousands.

Model, Vegas showgirl, wife of Zeppo Marx, Barbara had been out and about before she met Sinatra. He quickly won her over, but their long-term affair before their marriage did not please Sinatra's feisty mother, Dolly, who asked him, "Aren't there enough whores around?"

He was attentive, polite, but best of all he had a good eye "for stone," she writes. Meaning he could pick out amazing jewelry, including a famous Cartier necklace. And then there were the flights to Paris for dinner, the expensive cars, the suites in world-class hotels around the world. She calls it all "some candy jar."

There was a price to pay for all this, however. Sinatra could be a bully, screaming at Washington Post society columnist Maxine Cheshire and pushing a man into a phone booth, punching him before sliding the door shut.

She admits he was "definitely a Jekyll and Hyde" personality, recounting numerous evenings when he was overdrinking with his buddies, making scenes from New York to Hong Kong, ripping phones from the wall and throwing them into windows.

He also wasn't the most romantic. She had to accept that fact when a prenup was delivered to her on the morning of their wedding. She signed it.

Did he ever cheat? All she'll say is that she took Palm Springs neighbor Lee Annenberg's advice: Look the other way.

As for his connections to the Mob, she only says he got frustrated with the press for always alleging it. The press was not his favorite.

If you're a Sinatra fan, you'll learn he loved grilled cheese sandwiches, unfiltered Camels and Jack Daniels, but hated women who wore too much perfume. He also hated women who couldn't hold their liquor.

Barbara Sinatra could.

ADELE IS UK 'S MOST INFLUENTIAL IN MUSIC

Singer Adele has topped a list of the UK's 100 most influential people in the music industry.

The Guardian, which compiled the poll, said it was an "astonishing achievement" for the 23-year-old Rolling In The Deep star.

Her latest album 21 has topped the US chart and spent 15 of the last 17 weeks at number one in the UK.

Richard Russell from her record label XL said the secret to her success was the lack of "gimmicks" in her music.

At number two in the list was Lucian Grainge and David Joseph, who run Universal Music Group and Universal Music UK.

Simon Cowell, who runs record label Syco, was at number three with Radio 1's music policy executive Nigel Harding fourth.

At number five was iTunes UK, followed by Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, the founders of YouTube.

Radio 1's head of music George Ergatoudis was seventh, with the co-founders of Google - Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt - at number eight.

In ninth was SJM Concerts boss Simon Moran with the president of Amazon Jeff Bezos rounding off the top ten.

Adele found fame after being receiving the first critics choice Brit award in 2008.

She also topped the BBC's Sound of 2008 breakthrough list.

Her first album debuted at number one in the UK and she went on to win two Grammy Awards.

"The whole message with her is, it's just music. There's no gimmicks, there's no selling of sexuality," Mr Russell told the newspaper.

The list was compiled by a panel of music experts, which was lead by music manager Cerne Canning.

"Adele is the most powerful force in music at the moment. It is very refreshing to see something so successful done in such a sensitive way," he said.

SHAKIRA-Ojos asi

SHAKIRA CONSIDERING ALBUM IN ARABIC

Colombian pop singer Shakira said Saturday she would one day like to sing pop songs, if not an entire album, in Arabic.

The native Spanish speaker, who also has global hits in English, was speaking at a news conference in Morocco, where she was headlining the Mawazine World Rhythms music festival.

"It would be a challenge to do an album in Arabic. I would first have to learn Arabic," she said. "I am completely open to that experience. ... At some point I would love that to happen in my life."

Born in Colombia of Syrian origin, Shakira said she grew up listening to the Arab world's premier divas of the 20th century, Egyptian Umm Kalthum and Lebanese Fairuz.

Shakira often uses eastern dance, also known as belly dancing, in her acts, and her hit Spanish language single "Ojas Asi" relies heavily on a Middle Eastern melody. Her eastern origins and musical influences have made her popular throughout the Middle East.

She admitted, however, that she only speaks a few words of Arabic, including "ateeni boosa" or give me a kiss, provoking laughter among the mostly Moroccan crowd of journalists.

Morocco's 10th-annual Mawazine festival of world music concluded Saturday after eight days of music that saw bands from 60 countries, including Kanye West, Lionel Ritchie, Egypt's Amr Diab and Senegal's Youssou N'Dour.

MTV-NEW GENERATION 1

Over the years, one of the last things you'd see on the youth-obsessed MTV was a parent.

Now moms and dads aren't unusual sights, even on the twin totems to wild behavior and its consequences — "Jersey Shore" and "Teen Mom" — that are key to the network's latest resurgence. Many young viewers targeted by MTV have no problem with parents being an active part of their lives, even during rebellious years, and expect their presence on television.

Understanding such generational nuances is crucial to MTV, which has the brutal imperative of reinventing itself every five or six years to appeal to a new group of 12- to 24-year-olds. Their viewers eventually grow up. MTV never can.

The latest reinvention has MTV with its best ratings in five years. The third season of "Jersey Shore" was the network's top-rated show ever, and the second season of "Teen Mom" similarly zoomed up the charts. The challenge now is figuring out how to build on that success and know when to be ready for the next reinvention.

This spring, MTV has steered in a surprisingly traditional direction.

MTV debuts a remake of the "Teen Wolf" series on June 5, brings back "Beavis and Butt-head" later this year, has its own weight loss series for teens and two "Jersey Shore" spinoffs in the works. Between recycled ideas, spinoffs and a new focus on establishing scripted series, MTV's approach feels more like a typical broadcast network than ever before.

MTV viewers "want more from us," said Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music/Films/Logo Group. "They expect more from us."

Toffler, who has been with MTV since 1986, and newly appointed network president Stephen Friedman, at MTV since 1998, have survived its ups and downs over the years. The latest cycle began with the expiration of "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills."

After a reasonably successful first season of the reality competition series "Paris Hilton's Best Friend," the second season proved disastrous.

"The audience checked out," Friedman said. "You saw them not believing it. We found out they wanted something more honest. The manufactured reality felt phony to them."

After all, how many BFFs can you really have, even if you're Paris?

A couple of years ago MTV Networks acquired rights to a short reality series, "World's Strictest Parents," and it was put on the CMT network. MTV decided to run a few episodes, too, and was surprised at how many people watched. At the same time, MTV's head of reality programming had seen statistics about a rise in teen pregnancies and the series "16 and Pregnant" was born in spring 2009.

"Jersey Shore" began in a completely different form, as a pilot of a competition series for VH1. It was retooled into what now exists and MTV knew just by the way people were talking about promotions for the new series that it had a potential hit.

"When you get a little bit scared," Toffler said, "you know something might work."

"Real World," a series that has been on MTV for two decades and had grown a little tired, suddenly found its feet again commercially and creatively. A Washington-based season proved stale, and moving to Las Vegas for another edition increased the personal drama and fun. (Season 12 of the series, in 2002, also took place in Las Vegas and was one of the show's highest-rated seasons.)

MTV-NEW GENERATION 2

MTV viewers are interested in the rites of passage — such as young people moving into their first apartments and getting jobs in "Real World" — that are relatable yet more entertaining than their own lives, Friedman said. "We're looking for the lives of our audience amplified," he said.

"They did a really good job of doing a lot of research on their consumers and figuring out what is resonating with them," said Maureen Bosetti, an executive vice president at ZenithOptimedia, an ad buying and research firm. "I think it shows in the programming, and that's why they have hits like 'Jersey Shore.'"

Another key moment for MTV was the Video Music Awards incident in 2009 when Kanye West questioned Taylor Swift's award-worthiness onstage, an episode that exploded through social media. Toffler said MTV had been grappling with how to deal with social media, and came to see it through West's outburst as a means rather than an end: Social media can be a boon to the company if it has the content people want to talk about.

Blessed with success, MTV is looking to spread the "Jersey Shore" franchise with two spinoffs. In one, Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jenni "J-Woww" Farley buy a new house together; the other focuses on what disc jockey Paul "DJ Pauly D" DelVecchio's life is like. Neither project has air dates yet.

(AP Photo/Dan Steinberg) CloseFor MTV and other networks, taking advantage of a huge success in this manner is like holding your hand close to a fire. You can be warmed or burned, and it can all happen very fast.

"They've seen these ups and downs throughout their history — these big highs and then it all comes crashing down," Bosetti said. "You don't want to overexpose anything and you don't want to have too much of a good thing, because it will burn out."

That explains the breadth of programming under development at MTV, with scripted series the biggest step. "Teen Wolf" remakes the old Michael J. Fox movie at a time vampires and other supernatural creatures are popular. "Awkward," due in July, is about a high school girl who isn't noticed until an accident leaves her in a body cast. MTV hasn't said whether it will move forward with the sexually frank series "Skins," which attracted considerable attention last winter.

MTV has aired the reality series "I Used to Be Fat" and has "Ridiculousness," a show that runs through funny online videos, in the works. The network is also developing a new generation musical countdown show aimed at helping viewers come to grips with the breadth of music online.

Toffler said he's also interested in a show that explores the young generation's curiosity about faith and religion, as well as a program about integrating into the work force. It all must be tooled to a generation that thinks it's easier to start a company than to send out resumes, go on interviews and try to work for someone else, he said.

Even with programming forms similar to many other networks, MTV must speak to the life passages that happen quickly for its young viewers, Friedman said.

"One of the things the audience said to us was, 'You have to be pioneers and take risks,'" he said.

LADY GAGA MTV INTERVIEW ON HOW SHE GREW

MTV debuts "Lady Gaga: Inside the Outside," a stripped-down, relatively bare-bones interview in which Gaga ruminates on how she grew from quirky Stefani Germanotta into a pop culture sensation.

Those accustomed to the grandiose Gaga -- she of the meat dress and egg-like containment vessel -- will meet a new person here. To be sure, she's still Gaga: She wears a leather vest and high black boots, pantomime makeup and no pants, but she's a softer, more introspective version than the girl who shimmies and shouts across screen and stage.

She's a girl who loves Bruce Springsteen. In fact, she's a fan of many rock music greats whom her younger fans may not even know.

"Whenever I surge down a highway, I can't not think about Bruce Springsteen," she says, talking about one of the music icons her father introduced her to as a child. "It just doesn't happen. That's what's great about real legends. They own the whole f**king interstate."

She credits her parents, especially her father, for pushing her into music.

"It's totally their fault," she says. "Don't spoon-feed me the Beatles and Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen and Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and Elton John, and expect for me not to turn out this way."

As with all things Gaga, even the "normal" parts of her upbringing veered from the usual. She took piano lessons from a stripper.

"I remember I used to say 'Why do you have such long nails? Don't you ever cut your nails?''" Gaga says.

Before she was Gaga, Germanotta was a not-so-cool teenager. She reflects on one of her most embarrassing memories from that time, when a group of boys dumped her in a garbage can outside a New York City pizzeria while a hoard of classmates looked on and laughed.

"They picked me up and then threw me in a trash can on the street," she says. "It didn't sink in to me how bullying affected me until later in my life."

After her music career kicked off, there were more lows.

"I remember laying on my grandmother's couch crying," Gaga says, talking about being dropped from her first record label, Def Jam, after only three months. "And a Destiny's Child video came on and I remember watching Beyonce and thinking, 'Oh she's a star. I want that.' … And now I'm in music videos with Beyonce."

"Inside the Outside" comes as Gaga drops her highly-anticipated third album, "Born This Way," which is expected to sell between 800,000 and 850,000 copies in its first week and dominate the Billboard music charts.

Still, she maintains an attitude very similar to that of the picked-on teen she once was.

"I'm the girl that everyone said 'no,' and shook their head," Gaga says. "I'm a perpetual underdog."

GREASE ACTOR DIES AGED 60

Jeff Conaway, Grease and Taxi actor, dies aged 60
Conaway collapsed in his California home on 11 May .

Conaway played the swaggering teenager Kenickie, alongside John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. He also played Bobby in the comedy series Taxi.

His family decided to switch off his life-support machine after he had spent several days in an induced coma.

The actor had battled for years against drug and alcohol addiction, something that he blamed on pain from a lingering back injury.

He spoke openly about his addiction on the Celebrity Rehab reality show in 2008, his last TV appearance.

Conaway made his Broadway debut in 1960 at the age of 10 in the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama All the Way Home.

He got his big break with Grease in 1978, but also suffered a back injury during filming which led to an addiction to painkillers and other drugs.

Interviewed by Reuters news agency this month, his manager Phil Brock said: "Putting aside his demons, Jeff is the nicest, kindest, gentlest soul.

"He's a wonderful man, which makes it doubly sad that he is unable to conquer drugs. As a human being, he's the person who'd literally give the shirt off his back for someone."

He was perhaps best known for the role of taxi driver and struggling actor Bobby Wheeler in the 1978-1983 hit TV sitcom Taxi, which starred Danny DeVito and Christopher Lloyd.

MUSICIAN GIL SCOTT-HERON DIES AT 62

Musician Gil Scott-Heron, who helped lay the groundwork for rap by fusing minimalistic percussion, political expression and spoken-word poetry on songs such as "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" but saw his brilliance undermined by a years-long drug addiction, died Friday at age 62.

A friend, Doris C. Nolan, who answered the telephone listed for his Manhattan recording company, said he died in the afternoon at St. Luke's Hospital after becoming sick upon returning from a trip to Europe.

"We're all sort of shattered," she said.

Scott-Heron was known for work that reflected the fury of black America in the post-civil rights era and also spoke to the social and political disparities in the country. His songs often had incendiary titles — "Home is Where the Hatred Is," or "Whitey on the Moon," and through spoken word and song, he tapped the frustration of the masses.

Yet much of his life was also defined by his battle with crack cocaine, which also led to time in jail. In a 2008 interview with New York magazine, he said he had been living with HIV for years, but he still continued to perform and put out music; his last album, which came out this year, was a collaboration with artist Jamie xx, "We're Still Here," a reworking of Scott-Heron's acclaimed "I'm New Here," which was released in 2010.

He was also still smoking crack, as detailed in a New Yorker article last year.

Scott-Heron's influence on rap was such that he sometimes was referred to as the Godfather of Rap, a title he rejected.

"If there was any individual initiative that I was responsible for it might have been that there was music in certain poems of mine, with complete progression and repeating 'hooks,' which made them more like songs than just recitations with percussion," he wrote in the introduction to his 1990 collection of poems, "Now and Then."

He referred to his signature mix of percussion, politics and performed poetry as bluesology or Third World music. But then he said it was simply "black music or black American music."

"Because black Americans are now a tremendously diverse essence of all the places we've come from and the music and rhythms we brought with us," he wrote.

Nevertheless, his influence on generations of rappers has been demonstrated through sampling of his recordings by artists, including Kanye West, who closes out the last track of his latest album with a long excerpt of Scott-Heron's "Who Will Survive in America."

Scott-Heron recorded the song that would make him famous, "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," which critiqued mass media, for the album "125th and Lenox" in Harlem in the 1970s. He followed up that recording with more than a dozen albums, initially collaborating with musician Brian Jackson. His most recent album was "I'm New Here," which he began recording in 2007 and was released in 2010.

Throughout his musical career, he took on political issues of his time, including apartheid in South Africa and nuclear arms. He had been shaped by the politics of the 1960s and black literature, especially the Harlem Renaissance.

Scott-Heron was born in Chicago on April 1, 1949. He was raised in Jackson, Tenn., and in New York before attending college at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

Before turning to music, he was a novelist, at age 19, with the publication of "The Vulture," a murder mystery.

He also was the author of "The Nigger Factory," a social satire.

TAYLOR'S HOUSE FOR SALE

The 1960s ranch-style house in Bel Air that Elizabeth Taylor called home for the past 30 years is on the market for $8.6 million, according to Mossler Properties, which is handling the estate of the screen legend.

Taylor, 79, died on March 23.

According to Mossler's description, the "fully gated and secured" 7,000-sq.-ft. hilltop residence sits on approximately 1.27 acres. Photos for the listing show a private driveway and a broad, bricked motor court, a pool, as well as lush landscaping.

Contained on the interior main floor are "a large, galley-style country kitchen, powder room, lower master suite, two family bedrooms with garden access, and maid's quarters."

What once was a screening room has been converted into an office, while "an adjoining powder room has a sauna and shower for the pool."

The second-floor master suite offers "treetop views, master bath with spa tub, adjacent dressing room/salon and two smaller bedrooms."

Only pre-qualified buyers need apply.

HARD TO DOWNLOAD THE NEW LADY GAGA LP

Much like the caller in the Lady Gaga hit song "Telephone," some visitors to Amazon's site received a busy signal Monday when they tried to download the digital version of the artist's latest album, "Born This Way," which the online retailer was selling for 99 cents on its release date.

Spokeswoman Sally Fouts said Amazon experienced a high volume of traffic that caused delays for those downloading the album — echoing a posting on the album's product page on Amazon.com. Customers who ordered the MP3 version of "Born This Way" on Monday will get it for 99 cents, she said.

(An early evening attempt to buy the album on Amazon and use its new server-based storage system went seamlessly. The album appeared instantly on Amazon Cloud Drive and could be streamed online right away. The album downloaded in a few minutes to a computer. The user's storage space also registered the promotional 20 gigabytes of cloud storage that came with the album.

Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, is known for her pop music and outré fashion sense.

Customer reviews gave the album an average three out of five stars.

TROPICANA

ΤROPICANA,CUBA'S TOP CABARET-NIGHT CLUB

Tropicana is a world known cabaret and club in Havana, Cuba. It was launched in 1939 at Villa Mina, a six-acre (24,000 m²) suburban estate with lush tropical gardens in Havana's Marianao neighborhood.

The Tropicana had an impact in spreading Cuban culture internationally. New York's Tropicana was a Latin music club launched in 1945 by two Cuban restaurateurs, the brothers Manolo and Tony Alfaro, who made it the most glamorous nightclub in the Bronx. On the TV series I Love Lucy, the character Ricky Ricardo (played by Cuban-born Desi Arnaz) was a singer and bandleader at Manhattan's fictional Tropicana nightclub, now recreated in reality in Jamestown, New York at the Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Center's Tropicana Room. In 2004, the Atlantic City Tropicana opened The Quarter, which attempts to recreate the architecture, atmosphere and cuisine of Old Havana during the 1940s. In its September 1956 issue, Show magazine displayed a four-page spread on Tropicana (1957), a Mexican musical comedy filmed on location at the cabaret and featuring some of the Tropicana's performers.

The spectacular showplace that became The Tropicana evolved out of a Depression-era bohemian nightclub called Edén Concert, operated by Cuban impresario Victor de Correa. One day, two casino operators approached de Correa about opening a combination casino and cabaret on property on the outskirts of Havana rented from Guillermina Pérez Chaumont, known as Mina. The operators felt that the tropical gardens of her Villa Mina, would provide a lush natural setting for an outdoor cabaret. They cut a deal, and in December 1939, de Correa moved his company of singers, dancers and musicians into a converted mansion located on the estate. De Correa provided the food and entertainment, while Rafael Mascaro and Luis Bular operated the casino located in the chandeliered dining room of the estate's mansion. Originally known as El Beau Site, de Correa decided to rename the club Tropicana, because of its tropical atmosphere and "na" after the last syllable of the original owner, Mina. With a fanfare from the Alfredo Brito Orchestra, the Club Tropicana, opened on December 30, 1939. Its popularity with tourists grew steadily until the outbreak of World War II, which sharply curtailed tourism to Cuba.

During this time, Martín Fox, a burly, gregarious and well-connected gambler, began renting table space in the casino. Eventually, by 1950, he would amass enough profits to take over the lease of what would become The Tropicana. Martin Fox came to Havana from the countryside. They nicknamed "Guajiro Fox" (Fox, the peasant or country bumpkin) and he was big in the numbers of racket. As a person born and raised in the country, he loved plants and become their most ardent keeper. He had no education whatsoever, but he was bold and has close relations with the more solvent groups. Thus, in a few years he toppled Victor de Correa and, together with Alberto Ardura and Oscar Echemendia, formed an entrepreneurial trilogy that made Tropicana one of the most famous nightclubs in the continent. Hanging in through tough times, which included a temporary ban on casino gambling, Fox bought out de Correa’s interest in 1951 and tapped Alberto Ardura and Oscar Echemendia to replace him. This is when Tropicana’s glory years really began. Ardura hired maverick choreographer Roderico “Rodney” Neyra away from his chief rival on the cabaret scene, the Club San Souci, and Fox contracted up-and-coming Max Borges-Recio, who created Tropicana's Arcos de Cristal, parabolic concrete arches and glass walls over an indoor stage. Construction continued through 1951. Giant fruit trees were left in situ during construction to punctuate the interior. When the indoor cabaret at the air-conditioned Arcos de Cristal opened on March 15, 1952, it had a combined total seating capacity of 1,700 for the interior and outside areas with furniture designed by Charles Eames. The Arcos de Cristal won numerous international prizes when it was built and was one of only six Cuban buildings included in the landmark 1954 Museum of Modern Art exhibit entitled "Latin American Architecture since 1945."

But it was the arrival in Havana in 1946 of Floridian mobster Santo "Louie Santos" Trafficante Jr. that would alter the future of The Tropicana. Trafficante, Jr. had been sent by his father, Tampa godfather Santo Trafficante, Sr. (a man who always wanted to make it big in Cuba) to oversee La Cosa Nostra and Tampa Family casino and business interests there. Upon Trafficante, Sr.’s death in 1954, Santo, Jr. succeeded his father as boss of Tampa. That same year, as Trafficante, Jr.'s control of Tampa's lucrative bolita racket had been threatened by congressional hearings on mob activities in the U.S., he officially settled in Havana along with Meyer Lansky. Lansky would become the top syndicate figure in Cuba, appointing Trafficante his second in command.

Within a few years, Trafficante owned or held stakes in both The Tropicana and The Sans Souci (the only casinos which been operating in Havana for several years prior to 1955). Both clubs served drinks and meals which just about covered the operating costs. The profits from gambling amounted to approximately $5,000 a day, after "deductions". It was suspected that he also had behind-the-scenes interests in other syndicate owned Cuban gambling casinos namely those at, The Habana Riviera, The Nacional, The Sevilla-Biltmore, The Capri and the Havana Hilton. The newer casinos averaged even higher profits while the profits of the two original casinos remained more or less the same. Ironically, Lansky and Trafficante both avoided gambling. "Bartenders don't drink, because they see the consequences," Trafficante said at one point. "I know the odds are stacked against the players." According to a 1958 Treasury Department investigation The Tropicana casino (along with those at The Capri and The Nacional) were rumored to be using "bust-out dice" and "rigged equipment." According to their information the slot machines were "rigged for a very low pay off, due to the extremely high take off of the proceeds by officials."

Even though he retained Martín Fox and his brother Pedro as frontmen, Trafficante arranged for the Tropicana to be operated by Harry "Lefty" Clark (aliases: William Gusto, William G. Buschoff, Frank Bischoff), a suspected narcotic trafficker, and his brother, Wilbur of Las Vegas's Desert Inn. His principal assistant in the casino was one Pierre Canavese who had been previously deported from the U.S. to Italy but had subsequently entered Cuba by means of a fraudulent passport and was closely associated with Lucky Luciano

Although Lewis McWillie was officially appointed manager of the casino, the manager-in-chief of all the casinos in Havana was Lansky himself. According to author T.J. English, it was Lansky who knew how to run gambling operations with efficiency and good will. The showgirls at the Tropicana, known collectively as "Las Diosas de Carne" (or "Flesh Goddesses"), were renowned the world over for their voluptuousness, and the cabaret showcased a kind of sequin-and-feather musical theater that would be copied in Paris, New York, and Las Vegas. The lavish shows were staged by Neyra. Headliners included Xavier Cugat, Paul Robeson, Yma Sumac, Carmen Miranda, Nat King Cole, Josephine Baker and Liberace. Heralded as a "Paradise Under the Stars," the Tropicana became known for its showgirls, conga sounds, domino tournaments and flashy, spectacular productions. Nat King Cole's wife Maria paints a colorful portrait of the venue in its heyday: “It was breathtaking! My mouth just fell open...there was so much color, so much movement...and the orchestra! The house band had forty musicians...I said to Nat, ’that’s the house band? (Are there) that many showgirls?”

A Cabaret Guide issued in 1956 described The Tropicana as, "the largest and most beautiful night club in the world. Located on what was once a 36,000-square-meter estate, Tropicana has ample room for two complete sets of stages, table areas and dance floors, in addition to well-tended grounds extending beyond the night club proper. Tall trees rising over the tables and through the roof in some spots lend the proper tropical atmosphere which blends well with the ultra-modern architecture of the night club. Shows include a chorus line of 50 and the dancers often perform on catwalks among the trees. Rhythms and costumes are colorfully native, with voodooism a frequent theme. Top talent is imported from abroad. Minimum at tables is $4.50 per person, but this can be avoided by sitting at central bar which has a good view of both stages."

An unpublished article sent to Cuban Information Archives around 1956-57 describes the club in detail, "So as not to waste anyone's time, the gambling room at Tropicana is located right off the entrance lobby. The chandeliered room has ten tables for the usual fun and games, plus 30 slot machines lining the walls. Beyond the gambling room are the nightclub's two dining, dancing and show areas. The two areas are distinct: one is outdoors, with tall royal palms rising among and over the tables; the other is indoors and called the Crystal Arch. The Arch is indeed a huge, modernistic arch-like structure, and this area is used in inclement weather (and also when the outdoor area gets so crowded that there is no more room for customers). Tropicana's total seating capacity: 1,750, but of course you can stand at the bar or at the crap table, and the management won't object at all. Because of Tropicana's bucolic surroundings, the producer of the shows, Rodrigo Neira (better known simply as Rodney), can really spread himself. A Tropicana production number is not complete unless it includes at least half the chorus line dancing on catwalks among the trees. The schoolteacher from Paducah is suitable impressed when he sees scantily clad lassies scampering in front of him, to his right, to his left and above him. This is as hard on the neck muscles as watching a tennis match."

Also in 1956 Martín Fox arranged a special Club Tropicana tourist package: Cubana Airlines' Tropicana Special began a round-trip flight that ferried club customers from Miami to the Tropicana and returned them to Florida at 4am the following morning. The plane featured a wet bar stocked with a bevy of cocktail selections, as well as a scaled-down version of Armando Romeu’s orchestra for anyone brave enough to dance in the aisles.

The club soon became "a magnet for international celebrities, musicians, beautiful women, and gangsters.". The long list of stars who flocked to the Tropicana included Édith Piaf, Ernest Hemingway, Jimmy Durante, Pier Angeli, Maurice Chevalier, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Marlon Brando.

The history of the cabaret is detailed in Tropicana Nights: The Life and Times of the Legendary Cuban Nightclub (Harcourt, 2005) by Rosa Lowinger and Ofelia Fox. In Booklist, Mike Tribby reviewed:

Lowinger and Fox tell the story of Havana's notorious Tropicana nightclub, the template from which Las Vegas was made after the Batista government collapsed, and the Tropicana was closed. In its day the Tropicana was a prime site for gambling, elegance, seeing and being seen--a resort of choice for international gangsters and jet-setters. Readers who enjoyed Anthony Haden-Guest's "biography" of Studio 54, The Last Party (1997), will enjoy comparing the differing modes of showmanship, decadence, and ostentation current in the Tropicana's 1950s heyday to those of 1970s New York's debauched disco scene. Fox married Tropicana owner Martin Fox in 1952 and helped him run it until 1962, when they decamped to Miami. She and Lowinger take pains to establish that the Tropicana was hardly a sleazy Mob hangout but rather a world-class entertainment venue that discriminating gangsters happened to enjoy frequenting. An excellent resource on Cuban popular culture, lavish entertainment, and everyday life just before and just after Castro, this is also an exciting and rewarding read.
The Cuban Revolution was to have serious repercussions for the mob's involvement in Cuba. As early as December 31, 1956 a bomb exploded at The Tropicana. It was set by communist rebels to target the mafia godfathers in Havana. The explosion was contained to the bar area and one woman lost an arm. Despite this, and as even as Castro's rebels began to overthrow Havana two years later, Trafficante was heard to insist that the revolution was, "a temporary storm" that would "blow over." Lansky, the son of Russian exiles, disagreed. "I know a communist revolution when I see one," he said. He was correct. The new Cuban president, Manuel Urrutia Lleó closed the casinos and nationalized all the casino and hotel properties. This action essentially wiped out both Trafficante and Lansky's asset base and revenue streams in Havana. Cutting his losses Lansky decided to flee Havana. Trafficante remained, hoping he could cut a deal with the new regime. But Castro was not interested. He wanted to make an example of the mob, and Trafficante was seen as someone involved with Batista. He was hunted down and arrested. On June 21, 1959, along with friends of his like Guiseppe di Giorgi and Jack Lansky, Meyer's brother, Trafficante was interned in the Tiscornia camp in Havana.

Martín and his wife Ofelia Suárez, who had no children, fled to Miami. Martín died of a stroke in the mid-1960s. When Ofelia moved to Los Angeles with her long-time companion Rosa Sanchez, her Glendale house became a gathering place and social center for Cuban-American friends and neighbors who continued the Tropicana tradition of domino tournaments. Ofelia died at age 82 on January 2, 2006 of cancer and complications from diabetes at Burbank's Providence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Tropicana's musical director is Chuchito Valdes, the son of Chucho Valdes.

The Tropicana continues to operate to this day, attracting tourists to its Cabaret Shows taking place at 9pm, Tuesday to Sunday, in the open-air Salon Bajo Las Estrellas (weather permitting). These days, foreign tour groups comprise the majority of patrons. The layout of the club means that from many of the seats the show is difficult to see, although no seats have a restricted view. Tickets begin at CUC$65.

BILLBOARD MUSIC AWARDS RETURN AFTER A FIVE YEAR HIATUS

Rihanna and Taylor Swift were two of the key winners at the Billboard Music Awards, which returned after a five-year hiatus with a major dose of star power, featuring Beyonce, U2, the Black Eyed Peas — even First Lady Michelle Obama.

Like many other awards shows, the three-hour Billboard Awards served more as a promotional vehicle for today's top pop stars than a trophy presentation. The show was packed with performances — a piano-levitating Cee Lo Green, a scantily clad Rihanna on "S&M" joined by Britney Spears, a much-bleeped Lil Wayne with Mary J. Blige, and Neil Diamond leading the audience in a sing-a-long to "Sweet Caroline" and "America."

Among Rihanna's wins were for radio artist of the year and top female artist.

Swift won the evening's first award, as top album artist, behind the multimillion sales for "Speak Now." She also won top country artist.

Other award winners included Justin Bieber, Lady Antbellum and the Black Eyed Peas.

Beyonce received a special "Millennium" Award for her career achievements: The 29-year-old phenomenon was lauded in a video by an array of legends and luminaries, including Stevie Wonder, Barbara Streisand, Bono, Lady Gaga and Michelle Obama.

"This is a moment I have to soak in because it's gonna be — and it is — one of the best moments of my life," said Beyonce after getting the award from her mother, Tina Knowles. Beyonce also performed her new song, "Run the World (Girls)."

U2 was also honored for their blockbuster "360" tour as the top touring act of 2010, while Diamond received Billboard' "Icon" award.

"I would have settled for a top 10 record," he quipped. "I don't know what it means exactly to be an icon. I've always wanted to be one and I guess now I am."

This year marks the Billboard Awards' rebirth. The Billboard Awards had been a staple since 1989, but gave out what appeared to be its last award in 2006. This year, the show was brought back.

It was held in Las Vegas, broadcast live on ABC and hosted by "The Hangover 2'" star Ken Jeong.

The Billboard Music Awards are given out to music's most popular artists. The finalists and winners are determined by their rank on the Billboard charts and their "social and streaming activity."
